Tobias Wang is a Toronto-based event photographer with eyes finely tuned to music, movement and colour. Born in 1983, he moved to Canada from Taiwan at the age of 11 and was raised, with his sister, by a single mother. At 15, Wang discovered two life passions that would shape his teens and adulthood: photography and raving. He fell hard for bass and breakbeats, with jungle music not only taking him to raves and clubs (the fake I.D. didn’t hurt), it also inspired him to travel with camera in hand. By 1999, he shot three or more events each week.
Tobias took it fully pro in 2001, establishing Visualbass Photography. Toronto’s rave culture was absolutely exploding at the time, and Tobias was there to frame its heartbeat. He became in-house photographer for INK Entertainment, a relationship that continues to this day. Tobias has photographed the globe’s top electronic dance music stars, including Steve Angello, Hardwell, Tiesto, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Martin Garrix and, Armin van Buuren.
Tobias’ photos have been featured in publications including the Toronto Star, Toronto Life, NOW, The Grid, Exclaim and blogTO. Nike, eOne Films, Live Nation and Angello’s Size Records have been among his clients. Wang’s work also was awarded top prize in the 2013 Sound Image photo exhibition and contest.
Tobias lives in the city’s west end with his other great loves: wife Michelle and son Archer. Pop him a note if you would like to learn more.
